The fiercest fighting against the Turks near Đurđevac took place from 1552 to 1586. This was when the legend about the chicken was born, which spread the name of Đurđevac. It is connected with an attack on Đurđevac Castle. In 1552 Ulama-Bey had been besieging the castle for days waiting for the defenders to run out of food. The defenders decided to use guile and fired their last chicken at the Turks out of a cannon. Seeing this, the Turks withdrew thinking that there was no food shortage in the castle, and since then the inhabitants of Đurđevac have been called Picoki (picok = chicken, in the Đurđevac dialect).
